Initially used more as a fixation, today - thanks to the larger screw dimensions - increasingly also for supporting structures. In timber construction - at least in Central Europe - softwoods are used almost exclusively today. This does not have to remain the case; an increasing use of hardwoods is predicted for the future.
The reasons for the increased use of hardwoods are actually plausible:
- The ongoing shift to more hardwood forests increases the resource.
- The structural properties are good and today enable wood-based materials with excellent performance.
- The only difficulties are insufficient experience and a lack of suitable joining technologies.
